Thanks so much to Ursula for starting this thread. I agree that such an
approach to organizing conferences would help us in the future. I'm looking
at whatever we have documented from the past conferences WORT hosted and I'm
sure there's some good stuff to share.
Having lived 30 years in Detroit, I'm well aware of her reputation. Part of
the reason I moved away is that they had no community radio there. The
current renaissance is very exciting on many levels and as long as we plan
carefully and work with residents on the logistics, we can have a safe and
enjoyable conference in the Detroit area. There are indeed specific
troubled neighborhoods which are easily identified as well as many areas
which are vibrant and safe communities, as in any large urban area like
Chicago.
I'd vote for Detroit and be glad to help however I can. Fun fact: I used to
be involved with a pirate station there in the 90s. That was great and
genuinely revolutionary, but being able to have LPFMs now is definitely a
lot less stressful.
