Olympus LS-10 can sometimes be found used for a reasonable price.
Compact.
Metal case, quiet rotary controls for record and monitor volume
which can be used
while using the internal mics, which are quite decent,
without causing case
noise. Nice selection of recording modes including
pseudo-directional, and
automatic, or manual, level control with decent
meters.
Uses AA batteries which increases flexibility in the field over
recorders
with custom or wired-in rechargeables. Has consumer-grade
low-voltage
phantom power.
Downsides: external mic connector is stereo
mini (no XLR or 1/4"). With an 8GB
add-on card, it can take a minute for
the USB side of things to warm up.
Cost.
I find that the high build
quality is immediately obvious as soon as one is picked
up and makes the
Zooms, which are fine in their own right, seem like fragile
plastic
toys.
