Understanding and Fixing the Mayhem in Your Organization

3-Part Tele-workshop for 20 Particpants
Ursula Ruedenberg / Peyton Wimmer
April 1 : 2 PM EST
April 8: 2 PM EST

April 15: 2 PM EST

Dear community radio builder:

I am excited to announce a new workshop collaboration that I am experimenting with, for making inroads into one of the hardest things about community radio station management: bringing people together.

I have enjoyed considerable success in building the Pacifica Network affiliate Program and, recently, founding KHOI, a new full-power community radio station in Ames, Iowa. I have been told often that I am a good manager/leader and one of the things my co-workers love most is that when working with me, there is usually room for everyone to enjoy themselves and win.

One of the main reasons for successes I have had is I always seek out great teachers. So, to help me be a good manager in community radio, I found a remarkably talented teacher. If you attended the 2014 Grassroots Radio Conference, you may have experienced Peyton Wimmer’s expertise. If not, you are in for a treat.

Peyton Wimmer is a psychologist from Austin TX who has a remarkable understanding of the underlying systems of behavior in organizations. He has developed a powerful set of management concepts for building functionality. His ability to do this stems from lessons learned in his private practice with clients who traditionally fall through the cracks: children and adolescents with developmental delays, behavioral issues or the Gifted and Talented population; suicidal adolescents and adults; addiction and other life crisis situations.

So Peyton and I want to try out a little collaborative experiment, to test out whether we can translate these principles into effective tools for helping noncoms improve and flourish. If it works, we may develop it into a small consulting service. For now, though we will run a 3-class tele-workshop as a test project over the course of a 3 week period, where we will teach you the basic concepts for understanding problems and successes in your organization. We want to see if we can give you a whole new perspective within which you feel focused and empowered to implement positive change in your organization.

The tele-workshop will include:

An explanation of the structural conditions for organizations’ failure and success, in the abstract, and as applied to community radio stations

Workbooks for dealing with two common crisis situations in organizations

Problem-solving, where we apply the concepts to real problems brought by workshop participants

This is an invitation to you as a community radio manager. This 3-part tele-workshop to test out our pilot project: “WHY DO THEY DO THAT???...Understanding and Fixing the Mayhem in Your Organization”

It is going to be in a small group; we are inviting 20 people to go through the process with us at the super-crazy price of: no cost! and we will help you become empowered and focused as a team leader.

What we are asking in return is your willingness to participate in short assessment questions during the classes, and after the workshop ends, your feedback for improvement or even possibly a testimonial; your willingness to tell others about it would be great.

If you would like to join us, please just reply to this email and just say: SIGN ME UP. The class is limited to 20 participants so reply soon to reserve your spot! I will email you a link to register on a first-come-first-serve basis. By the way, we will record the classes, so if you can't attend, there will be recordings.

This pilot workshop will begin April 1 at 2 PM EST and continue on April 8 and 15 all at 2 PM EST. The first and last sessions will be webinars and the middle session will be a conference call. So jump in – let’s do this!

FYI - Some information about us:

Peyton Wimmer holds a Masters in Education for counseling. He has worked for more than 20 years with nonprofit mental health, health - providing counseling and social services to the music and creative community in Austin, TX, where he lives and is also a working musician. In his private practice, Peyton has focused particularly on people who are exceptional: children and adolescents with developmental and behavioral issues, Gifted and Talented populations; suicidal adolescents and adults; addicts and people in other life crisis situations. His interest in nonprofit organizations is partially due to the role noncoms can play in making a place in community for those who may be otherwise marginalized.

Ursula Ruedenberg holds a Master of Fine Art and has been building organizations from the ground up for 40 years. Some organizations she founded include a rape crisis center, a food coop, a mural painting collective, and a 15-year community mural program for the City of New York Parks & Recreation Department. In 2002 she was hired by Pacifica Foundation to build their Affiliate Program, which has grown into a broadcast network of almost 200 community radio stations. In 2010, Ruedenberg led the project to build KHOI, a full-power community radio station in Ames Iowa, where she currently serves as the volunteer station manager, as well as serving as the manager of Pacifica’s affiliate network.
