It's hard to believe that nearly a year has gone by since our conference in Portland. It was a joy to be a part of that conference, and to meet many of you in person. In this last year, I've had HUGE transitions in my life, one being that after 19 years of being on paid staff at KBOO, I have retired from my position as Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator. I'm not sure what I'm doing next, but I value the relationships I have with the GRC, and want to continue my work with this wonderfully amorphous group. I hope to see many of my friends and catch up in person. I hope to meet many new friends and hear about what you do! Theresa and I will be driving across country starting in mid to late September, and would love to visit stations, folks, and places of interest along the way (leaving Oregon, mostly traveling around the 94 / 90 route, with a little time to wander. I'd love to hear suggestions from you all! I'd be pleased to have any of you help me decide how to structure that time -- even become a co-presenter with me. ????? This was inspired by Lisa Loving's presentations in last year's GRC, where I heard that part of KBOO's success rested on an on-going training program that has offered free training to thousands, roughly 10% of whom have become volunteer news producers for KBOO, and virtually all of the remaining 90% LOVE KBOO and help the station in other ways.? This board includes representatives from all Pacifica-owned stations (KPFA, KPFK, WPFW, WBAI and KPFT).? Starting recently, the board also has representatives of the Pacifca affiliates.? These are the many LPFM and full-service FM community stations that promote the Pacifica Mission through the airing of programming and through the submission of programming to other affiliates. The current plan would completely gut the board, including those who I know, who are working hard to "fix" Pacifica from the inside.? This current plan also eliminates the local station boards which are the voices who represent the unique cultural needs of each of the 5 Pacifica-owned stations. REC's main concern is around the affiliates.? We note that the petition does not even have a space for affiliates to fill out a petition if they wanted to.? Its only limited to paid members and staff of the 5 stations. Under the proposed plan, affiliates can be represented by "at large" members appointed by the new board however there is no requirement that they do. The Pacifica affiliates deserve a voice at the table.? ?They worked hard to achieve a louder voice.? Let's not silence that voice. Say "no" to this petition. Besides the technical matter that the petition is fake because the bylaws amendment proposed will never be submitted because the timeline contained in it is impossible to carry out, the proposal is antithetical to everything GRC has said for more than two decades. Removing the prohibition against selling station frequencies without a vote of the members is a non-starter. And placing that decision solely in the hands of six unelected people is what we fought against. The proposal is also severely anti-worker and needs to be opposed by anyone who believes in worker rights. Removing the indemnification of Pacifica employees against lawsuit protection means that any individual named in a lawsuit against Pacifica including managers, program directors, and programmers would be forced to hire their own attorneys and pay their own attorneys fees. I suspect that violates all the union contracts in existence, all the management contracts in existence, and even if it doesn't, it is morally reprehensible. Most of the people signing this simply aren't reading it and are believing misrepresentations about what it says. I'm not even sure most of the people hawking it have read it. If they have, they should be ashamed of themselves. The national board and all 5 local boards do need to vote on the proposal, but whether they vote yes or no, it would have to be ratified by the members via an election that meets a 10% quorum. Then there would have to be a new election for the new board. So it is two more elections making that three in a year. Yes, it is pouring cash down the drain in the short term. I don't think it will get as far as lawsuits, but if it should happen too, that will add to the cash drain. I assume those supporting it figure the later sale of a station on the okay of six people they select is how they will address the costs. There is nothing else in the proposal to pay for it.
