Sonya is an award-winning journalist and community media leader committed to telling the stories of historically excluded communities. She has always worked towards creating a just, healthy, and equitable society. Sonya has recently received her Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership from Mercer University with a thesis focusing on the experiences of journalists of color receiving fellowships, ?Inclusion in Fellowships But Exclusion In The Industry??. Sonya was awarded the prestigious Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship from the University of Michigan, where she researched how language, attitudes and approaches in journalism narratives can perpetuate stereotypes about race, class and identity. Sonya has served as Engagement Coordinator at the Center for Collaborative Journalism at Mercer University, as News Director and Interim Assistant General Manager at 91.3 KBCS in Bellevue/Seattle WA, and as a news producer at ABC affiliate television stations in Seattle and Denver. Sonya serves as the Board President for the National Federation of Community Broadcasters. Sonya succeeds Lisa Rudman, who led the organization for seventeen years following in the steps of Peggy Law and her co-founders Norman Solomon and David Barsamian. Lisa grew Making Contact from a radio program into a stalwart organization of social justice journalism and training. Lisa expanded the program?s reach to new audiences, increased the organization?s funding base, forged collaborative partnerships with community groups and media outlets, and established paid community storytelling fellowships, while building a staff and freelancer pool representative of the diverse communities that Making Contact serves. Lisa has chosen to pass the administrative baton to a new leader and to concentrate on her true love, media production. She?ll continue to assist in fundraising and production to support Sonya and the core producers, Monica Lopez, Anita Johnson, and Salima Hamirani. During 2019, Making Contact?s board of directors crafted a leadership succession plan that includes Lisa providing assistance to Sonya for her first six months. Sonya officially starts June 8th and we look forward to virtual gatherings (and hopefully some in person too), where you?ll have the pleasure of meeting her. Lisa says, ?This is a key moment in Making Contact?s leadership succession planning, and a critical moment in our society at large. I?m delighted to support Sonya and her vision to expand Making Contact?s resources for our talented journalists who focus on stories of justice and liberation.? ?Sonya brings us a dynamic combination of skills and experience,? says board chair Mickey Ellinger. ?She is committed to Making Contact?s mission of highlighting voices from movements that are working for justice in underrepresented communities. She has years of experience as a radio journalist and working with national media organizations. And she has just completed a graduate degree in organizational leadership. We are excited to work with her.? *Sonya says, ??I am truly honored for the opportunity to lead Making Contact. More than ever, independent grassroots media like Making Contact are essential and needed to center the narratives of historically excluded communities underserved by mainstream media, particularly people?and especially women--of color, immigrants and LGBTQ identified people. I look forward to connecting and working with everyone who values this organization. Agenda below. Tom. This is a reminder that the Pacifica National Board is meeting day after tomorrow! Pacifica National Board Special Meeting Saturday, May 30, 2020 12:00 PM PDT Virtual Town Hall Open Session Dial In: +1 (619) 309-1058 code 67 14 99# Streamed at https://kpftx.org:9000/pnb_1 Agenda: The PNB will go into a Committee of the Whole and conduct a Virtual Town Hall meeting with the Pacifica community. No PNB business will be done and no motions will be discussed. The topic for discussion will be, "What should be the role of Pacifica in this pandemic crisis?" This is an opportunity for Directors to engage in a dialogue with listeners, staff and others about what Pacifica and the affiliates could do in this difficult period. From pbame at prometheusradio.org Fri May 29 06:50:09 2020 From: pbame at prometheusradio.org (Paul Bame) Date: Fri, 29 May 2020 09:50:09 -0400 Subject: [grc] Job Posting: Radio Producer/ Trainer/ Journalist Message-ID: Job Posting: Radio Producer/ Trainer/ Journalist The Center For International Media Action is accepting applications for a radio journalist to spearhead a new collaborative project in Philadelphia between ten small community radio stations in the region. This project will take highlights of Covid related coverage from shows on the ten radio stations, and combine them into an hour long program per week which will be broadcast on the ten stations. The responsibilities of this job will be to provide mentorship and critical feedback to the shows on the different stations, and help pick highlights from them and produce a weekly hour long program that can be shared around the whole city. The initial focus will be the Covid-19 crisis and its aftermath, but we hope that the collaboration will continue on after the crisis has passed. This is not an opportunity for a follower. You will have to be a leader to spearhead and develop the shows on the member stations, and the new collaborative show. The job is as much to mentor citizen journalists as it is to produce the shows. Funding is in place for the project through December, and if we are successful will continue into the future. This position will require experience as a radio journalist, strong teaching skills, management of volunteers, ability to work under deadline and set deadlines for volunteer citizen journalists. Applicants should be familiar with free tools like Audacity and have strong enough computer and audio production skills to assist others. Applicants should be capable of giving compassionate feedback to build the skills of volunteers who want to work in radio but have no formal training yet. Compensation is $34,000 to $40,000 per year, depending on experience. Compensation package may be negotiated to include health insurance or other benefits balanced with salary. We are open to breaking this into two half time jobs, if that is preferable. We are open to less experienced applicants who may lack one or two key skills but have strong leadership qualities. For instance, we might consider an experienced journalist with a background in training volunteer citizen journalists, but limited experience in audio production. The job is in Philadelphia, mostly you can work from home, but there is office space available. If you are not from Philadelphia, you can start by working remotely, but you would be expected to move here when social distancing has ended. We may be able to help with transitional housing if you need to relocate. Spanish language is a big plus. If you would like to apply, send a resume, cover letter, and sample of your work to Pete Tridish (petriimarad.io) at the Center For International Media Action. (www.imarad.io) Every Kind of Everybody capable of leading this project is encouraged to apply, discriminators are total losers as far as we are concerned. Deadline: June 4. Please send resume, cover letter, and samples of written and audio work. A description of the project below: All participating stations will develop at least one regular show with Covid 19 related content of a local nature, relevant to their neighborhood. This might be an existing show refocused, or a new show. Focus could be on how the crisis is affecting that neighborhood, local efforts to help, resources that people should realize are there, and providing solid public health information to prevent rumors and scams. It could include, for example, interviews with local nurses, people who are sewing masks, efforts to provide childcare for health workers, mental health support, and all the ways that people are reacting to this crisis. Even after social distancing is relaxed, these stations can continue to play a large role in knitting together the community, strengthening our institutions to prevent another outbreak, facing the economic impact of the crisis together, and building a fair economy with more of a safety net after the crash. We will take weekly highlights from all the shows on different stations and produce one show that can be carried on all stations.
