Summary: Featured speakers/guests:
This week, Theresa speaks with Brianna Fiene. Brianne assists in the
coordination and implementation of farm to institution and farm to school
grant work at the Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work focuses on developing
partnerships with institutions, researchers, business and industry
stakeholders to create resilient value-chains critical for sustainable
food-systems and regional farm to school events that connect Midwest
producers to institutional markets. She is particularly interested in
issues surrounding resilient and equitable food systems and building a
regional grain shed. In 2021 she will be co-managing a USDA Farmer Market
Promotion Program grant that amplifies value chains and demand for grains
to institutional settings. She will also work with Vanessa Herald in
managing CIAS farm to institution and farm to school programming and
events, such as the Wisconsin Chili Lunch and the Great Lakes Great Apple
Crunch.
In the past, Brianna has worked on organic vegetable farms in Wisconsin and
California, volunteered and helped start multiple community gardens, held a
role as the Farm to Business Director at Madison non-profit REAP Food Group
and developed supply chains and markets for specialty and variety-specific
grains.

Heartland Stories Radio is a weekly 29-minute radio show that is also
available as a podcast, sponsored initially by the Heartland Study, a non
profit research project dedicated to protecting the health of pregnant
women and their babies. Each show engages listeners on the issues and
challenges in food, farming and global health. While the team is in the
Heartland, where much food is produced, our issues and interviews are with
change makers, influentials and everyday people from all over the globe. We
present solid information about what we all can do together to assure a
healthy and just food system for the 21st century.
