[grc] Audacity user question

I normally produce in mono, but I have a piece in lovely stereo I want to
issue. I used it to start my project, and it is still in stereo.  My
problem is that when I record my narration it only comes out in mono.  I
see on the dropdown menu under tracks that there is a "make stereo" option
- however, it is grayed out.  Can anyone help me trouble-shoot?
