Overview

WPFW is a public affairs and jazz music community radio station serving the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It is owned by the Pacifica Foundation, and its studios are located on K Street Northwest.

WPFW is dedicated to programming that reflects progressive social change and democracy. The station advances a global, humanistic, and futuristic approach to news, public affairs, the creative arts, and cultural programming.

The Producer/Reporter position is located in the News Department, and is part of a team that produces daily newscasts Monday through Friday, and a weekly hour-long public affairs program. The team participates in the production of special public affairs news programming as needed.

Work Location: Remote, with the possibility of working in-person as the COVID pandemic evolves.

Responsibilities

	• ●  Write and produce up to 8 five-minute newscasts each week

		• ○  Follows news closely and selects stories to be included in newscasts

		• ○  Generates original scripts for stories to be covered

		• ○  Records and produces newscasts to specified time

	• ●  Participate in the editorial planning of the weekly news program

		• ○  Attends editorial meetings

		• ○  Generates original ideas for host interviews, reporter pieces, and other

show elements

		• ○  Participates in story selection and assignment

	• ●  Produce up to two program pieces per week for WPFW’s weekly news program, “Monday Morning QB”

		• ○  Identifies guests and audio for assigned pieces

		• ○  Books, researches, and conducts interviews

		• ○  Researches and gathers audio elements

		• ○  Writes script and produces pieces to desired time

	• ●  Participates in planning and production of public affairs special programming, both for WPFW and the Pacifica News Network

○ Assists in evaluating need and appropriate placement for special

programming

	• ○  Assists in identifying host, break-out topics, and potential guests

	• ○  Assists in producing guest participation and various audio elements

Preferred Skills

	• ●  Familiarity with the issues, ideas, and perspectives that interest our audience and are central to the service we provide

	• ●  Demonstrated writing ability, preferably for broadcast

	• ●  Familiarity with, or willingness to learn, audio production needs including

recording interviews and other live elements, editing audio elements, and mixing

elements into final form

	• ●  Passion for connecting with diverse communities

	• ●  Willingness to work in a collaborative setting

	• ●  Ability to work independently, as well as part of a collaborative team

	• ●  Ability to maintain high journalistic standards under deadline pressure

Terms of Employment

This position is part of a SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit. The new hire will be guided by the shop steward in the onboarding process. This is a full-time, 40 hours/week position with minimum annual pay of $38,625, plus generous benefits.
