There are few decisions you will make this year that are more important than the elected officials you will choose to represent you. Although we will not tell you who to vote for, we WILL tell you that NOT voting should not be an option. Whether you participate or not, SOMEONE will get elected and make decisions that will affect you. So why not have a say by voting for the candidate(s) that best represent your views. To this end, KLEK has scheduled interviews with various candidates running for local and state offices for the upcoming elections. Every effort was made to reach out to as many candidates as possible. There are candidates we are still awaiting replies from and we will schedule them as soon as possible. If you are a candidate or know of a candidate not on this list, please let us know so we may contact you. Scroll down to see the candidates and the times each will appear. Then tune in or watch on our Facebook Live feed and ask questions. Most importantly on election day, VOTE! Summary: Featured speakers/guests: This week Theresa speaks with Michelle Horovitz co-founder of Appetite For Change, which is working to bring people together to learn, cook, eat, and grow food, creating change that lasts. Michelle Horovitz Notes: Credits: Heartland Stories Radio is a weekly 29-minute radio show that is also available as a podcast, sponsored initially by the Heartland Study, a non profit research project dedicated to protecting the health of pregnant women and their babies. Each show engages listeners on the issues and challenges in food, farming and global health. While the team is in the Heartland, where much food is produced, our issues and interviews are with change makers, influentials and everyday people from all over the globe. We present solid information about what we all can do together to assure a healthy and just food system for the 21st century. Episodes are available on Audioport. Most U.S. based-shortwave stations are either religious ministries, and/or sell blocks of time to almost anyone with the cash. See: https://www.fcc.gov/general/high-frequency-broadcasting https://www.fcc.gov/general/fcc-high-frequency-stations https://www.fcc.gov/reports-research/guides/fact-sheet-building-high-frequency-shortwave-international-broadcasting-station This was a wonderful progressive shortwave effort based in Costa Rica, which folded in 2003. We were going to volunteer there. http://www.rfpi.org/ Maybe talk to this guy: https://www.linkedin.com/in/steven-tingley Listenership in first-world countries is very low, but the possible creation of a ?New Iron Curtain? is reviving interest. Public radio member organizations Public Radio Program Directors (PRPD) , National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB) , and VuHaus Group are encouraging all member radio stations to air the song at that time. Sally Kane, CEO of NFCB, added, "Right up there with food, clothing, and shelter - human connection is something we can't live without. Radio has always amplified connection, and at this moment in time, we can take action for the people of Ukraine and reinforce the connection we share as human beings. It's the only power we have that can outlast the kind of depravity that has been unleashed. To do nothing in the face of this transgression is to be complicit in its devastation. This is why we take to the airwaves; it's our sacred duty." If your station would like to participate, all assets can be downloaded from the Paragon website at http://www.paragonmediastrategies.com/. This includes the :15 second recorded promo and copy to air in advance, a recorded introduction paired with the song audio that will time out at exactly 5 minutes, intro copy and the song audio file for stations that wish to produce or read their own introduction, a graphic image, and a social media playbook for stations to pre-promote the event off-air. Radio for Peace International RFPI shortwave broadcasts from Costa Rica was forced off the air in 2004 by the capitalist powers that be. At the 2006 GRC Bill Taylor and myself failed to gain sufficient support to build a US based international short wave station even though we had some of the major items lined up. As we deteriorate towards climate change and perpetual wars, my labor is still available to build a backup Shortwave station. -Tom. Most of their airtime is sold to evangelists, with a handful of alternative DJs. The FCC prohibits construction and operation of shortwave stations intended for a domestic US audience, and a minimum 50 kW power -- big an expensive, in other words -- is required if you are broadcasting in AM. There are also restrictions on languages. These are some of the WWII-era regulations which the FCC has never reviewed since they were established. The FCC thinks themselves are so innovative and deregulatory, but they have never re-examined these old restrictions which they still impose on stations. They make no sense now, and anyone who has followed my work on this subject knows my colleagues and I have been trying various openings within FCC to get these and other old rules changed or lifted. Not because we necessarily want to start shortwave stations -- though one of us does have a show on several SW stations. But we think anyone ought to be able to experiment and broadcast, much more cheaply, to Americans if they want to try. This scene may finally change, however, now that trading entrepreneurs want shortwave and have been spending big to get into it. This is forcing the FCC to think about things it has long ignored. That was the focus of the report I previously linked. Europe is way ahead of the US on this, as several countries have deregulated shortwave and allowed various private broadcast stations and a wide variety of programs. While shortwave is in Part 73, it is actually administrated out of the International Bureau. I am not aware of any restrictions on language.? But yes, the rules do state that the service is not intended for a domestic audience.? When stations request their frequency hours from the FCC, they have to state which ITU zones they are wanting to target and on which bands.? They must target zones outside of the USA (this even means that Canada and Mexico can be target zones). Also, stations operating Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) can operate at 10 kW.? There are folks trying get SW stations licensed for the use of sending instant stock trading data via HF radio to Europe using the DRM datastream. The programming rules are not enforced.. trust me, there's a lot of programming that does not promote international goodwill and the other things mentioned in those rules.? Preppers, militias, extremist evangelists, anti-semites and the like.? Of course, if the Commission goes after stations, this can raise a huge first amendment issue.. a rabbit hole I don't see a Commission of either party majority wanting to go down. Also, because of the fact that shortwave stations can't target domestic listeners, a shortwave station is not considered an attributable broadcast interest.? Yes, that even means that a shortwave licensee can also own an LPFM (and one does). When I was at the National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters convention in Elkhart, IN a few years ago, there was someone passing around the concept of allowing domestic shortwave service and with power levels of less than 50 kW.? I am very on the fence about this. One thing I have pushed in the past is the ability to use the 11 meter shortwave band (25.6~26.1 MHz) for local domestic broadcasting using Digital Radio Mondiale as an extension of the LPFM service with a primary goal of trying to reach minority expat communities.?? I have already written draft service rules.? 11m DRM local broadcasting has been tested in Germany, Mexico and Brazil and the ITU has specific directives that endorse the use of a portion of the 11m band for domestic local broadcasting. If anyone has any shortwave questions, they can send them towards my shop. During some periods in the cycles, the skip could be severe. 11 meters is a crappy band, in the transition area between SW and VHF, which is why they plopped CB radio there. Michael D. Yes.. definitely WBCQ, WTTW, WRMI, etc. will sell airtime. While shortwave is in Part 73, it is actually administrated out of the International Bureau. I am not aware of any restrictions on language. But yes, the rules do state that the service is not intended for a domestic audience. When stations request their frequency hours from the FCC, they have to state which ITU zones they are wanting to target and on which bands. They must target zones outside of the USA (this even means that Canada and Mexico can be target zones). Also, stations operating Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) can operate at 10 kW. There are folks trying get SW stations licensed for the use of sending instant stock trading data via HF radio to Europe using the DRM datastream. The programming rules are not enforced.. trust me, there's a lot of programming that does not promote international goodwill and the other things mentioned in those rules. Preppers, militias, extremist evangelists, anti-semites and the like. Of course, if the Commission goes after stations, this can raise a huge first amendment issue.. a rabbit hole I don't see a Commission of either party majority wanting to go down. Also, because of the fact that shortwave stations can't target domestic listeners, a shortwave station is not considered an attributable broadcast interest. Yes, that even means that a shortwave licensee can also own an LPFM (and one does). When I was at the National Association of Shortwave Broadcasters convention in Elkhart, IN a few years ago, there was someone passing around the concept of allowing domestic shortwave service and with power levels of less than 50 kW. I am very on the fence about this. One thing I have pushed in the past is the ability to use the 11 meter shortwave band (25.6~26.1 MHz) for local domestic broadcasting using Digital Radio Mondiale as an extension of the LPFM service with a primary goal of trying to reach minority expat communities. I have already written draft service rules. 11m DRM local broadcasting has been tested in Germany, Mexico and Brazil and the ITU has specific directives that endorse the use of a portion of the 11m band for domestic local broadcasting. If anyone has any shortwave questions, they can send them towards my shop. This is a subject we handle. -- *Michelle Bradley, CBT, KU3N* /Founder: REC Networks/ +1 202 621-2355 https://recnet.com facebook.com/recnet - Twitter: @michichan On 3/9/2022 8:40 PM, Bennett Z. Constructive comments and civil conversation regarding Community Radio and Grassroots Radio are always welcome on this list. The problem is not just "the violent invasion of the Russian military." The U.S. is at war with Ukraine and has been since 2014. I wish Putin hadn't done what he did, but he has been provoked by NATO's expansion right up to Russia and its ally Belarus's borders for decades. See Oliver Stone's film, "Ukraine on Fire," which has been banned from the YouTube just because it's a dissenting voice?and a use of the free speech rights, which are becoming more attenuated in the US every day. Rumble picked it up and is offering it for free in support of free speech rights. YouTube is a platform created by a private corporation, and private corporations don't owe anyone free speech, but the US government is now so wedded to Big Tech that this amounts to government censorship. Why are there no tears for DR Congo, where millions have died because of US proxy wars and occupation since 1996? And where child labor is brutally exploited to mine gold and various minerals required to manufacture weapons and renewable energy? Why has no one ever been prosecuted for the horrific human rights abuse, including genocide, documened in the 2010 UN Mapping Report on the Democratic Republic of Congo? There are many more horrific crimes and proxy wars underway in the Global South every day, but we don't have campaigns and outpourings of anguish over them because the US and/or its European allies are responsible. By the time he left office, Obama had dropped a record number of Cruise Missiles on Syria, so many that Lockheed Martin had gone into emergency production to manufacture more. Libya has been in a state of chaos since NATO decimated it in 2011. Millions of Ethiopians have been displaced by an ongoing civil conflict begun by TPLF, the US's longtime ally and proxy army in Africa. And then there's Palestine, which I'm sure we all know about. This is a piece I wrote this week about US sanctions, which are economic warfare and outright theft.: https://blackagendareport.com/sanctions-sanctimonious-word-economic-warfare-and-outright-theft . I'm not saying any of this to be aggressive with Sharon. As I said at the beginning of this, I think there's a failure in much of Pacifica to understand the context of the Russia/Ukraine war, which is actually a US/NATO/Russia war. To my mind, Democracy Now's coverage has been for the most part ahistoric. Since our inception, ARTxFM has used our radio waves to help those people oppressed by global politics, natural disasters, and authoritarian regimes -- both here in Louisville and abroad. From Iraq to Haiti to Syria to Afghanistan to Ukraine -- we have informed our listeners about unfolding international disasters and provided them with ways they can help alleviate the human suffering. We have been glad to share our programming and PSAs on all of these topics with our colleagues in the community radio world. Among the ARTxFM staff we presently have a DJ who is from Ukraine and lived in the Western most parts of Russia. He has family trapped within the conflict zone -- and others in Poland helping the refugees. No matter what the global politics, this war is very personal for him and thousands of others bearing its brutal consequences. Andriy Sherehiy's weekly radio program DOBRI DEN includes music of Ukraine interwoven with the voices of his friends and family who are watching this tragedy unfold in the form of bombs and gunfire all around them. They send us stories each week of shuffling their families back and forth to safety while navigating the terrors of war. Megan Sherehiy, who co-hosts Dobryi Den with her husband, composed the PSAs that I circulated within the previous Resources for Ukraine e-mail. In so doing, she doubled checked all of the organizations with Guidestar and with family members in Ukraine -- to be sure we were getting the word out about those groups that were truly doing the hardest work. Megan & Andriy have been a great asset to our community for understanding truly what is happening on the ground in present-day Ukraine. They bring primary source voices to the airwaves and we feel it is our responsibility to share those voices and these resources with the Grassroots Radio Community that has the power to amplify their message even further. I hope that any of the stations involved on this listserve would the same thing when a member of their staff has personal insight on any global crisis -- and perhaps this can inspire them to do so! Thank you to the many individuals who have reached out over the past few days with your support, input, and advice. This is the type of community I love about the GRC! I hope you will stay in touch and continue to help us develop this network for sharing international resources. & to the haters, you can take your Russian Warships someplace else. I think his presence might attract the philosophies of Emma, Voltarine and maybe Karl to GRC; and that radical analyses of power are more likely to happen, even courageously facing the inevitable (and sometimes essential) indignity of the exercise of station- and network-management power. Those flavors seem almost absent from the GRC melange these days. I miss 'em along with Michael. I still have a website we created containing some controversy -- imagine that! In those days I wondered if I had the strength of character to become a principled grassroots-radio curmudgeon myself when I got older. The mirror says I've done only one of those things so far. ## Paul (he/him) (pablito) Bame Engineering Director, Philadelphia, Prometheus Radio Project 215.727.9620 x2 / 970.988.3849 On Wed, Mar 16, 2022 at 12:37 PM Kali via grc wrote: > I never got to meet him but my old friend Jim Swope was most impressed > and when that happened I too felt respect. President Zelensky has called on the world to recognize this milestone with demonstrations of support for his wartorn country and those fighting to keep it free. In response, we are asking ALL GRASSROOTS RADIO STATIONS to help us mark this sober occasion and express our support for the Ukrainian people by playing the UKRAINIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM - whatever version you prefer - ON AIR TODAY -- THURSDAY, MARCH 24 -- 7 PM Eastern / 4 PM Pacific. PLEASE PASS IT ON - QUICKLY!!!! While this may seem sudden, its not near as sudden as the way the Ukrainian life was upended and torn to shreds by Putin's horrific onslaught of violence. This radio action is an easy way for our stations to help those who have been through so much. If 7 PM EDT cannot work for you, please play the Ukrainian anthem at another time on MARCH 24th. As always, we welcome you to be creative but there is something so powerful in knowing we are all broadcasting in unison. In whatever way you participate, please let us know. We'd like to keep track of stations involved. Thank you. In Solidarity, Sharon *************************** Sharon M. Scott, Co-Founder & General Manager ARTxFM / WXOX 97.1 FM P.O. We will be sharing a list of Participating stations with our allies in Ukraine who were tuning in and found it quite moving. If you are one of these stations and have not let us know yet, please do so at this time. Should this horrific war continue, we also will continue marking the 24th of each month that passes with some sort of community radio simulcast. Your support is appreciated. Summary: Featured speakers/guests: This week Theresa speaks with Larry Jacobs. Larry and his wife, Sandra Belin, started growing organically on just eight coastal acres in Pescadero, California. Through strong passion during the back-to-the-land movement, this plot of coastal land flourished. Jacobs Farm has since expanded to include seven sites along Californias Central Coast and has become an industry leader in organic herbs. Larry Jacobs Notes: Credits: Heartland Stories Radio is a weekly 29-minute radio show that is also available as a podcast, sponsored initially by the Heartland Study, a non profit research project dedicated to protecting the health of pregnant women and their babies.
