A nation under attack reaches its hand out to us . . . there are those
who will chose to help and those who will create elaborate excuses that
justify turning away.
Since our inception, ARTxFM has used our radio waves to help those
people oppressed by global politics, natural disasters, and
authoritarian regimes -- both here in Louisville and abroad. From Iraq
to Haiti to Syria to Afghanistan to Ukraine -- we have informed our
listeners about unfolding international disasters and provided them with
ways they can help alleviate the human suffering. We have been glad to
share our programming and PSAs on all of these topics with our
colleagues in the community radio world.
Among the ARTxFM staff we presently have a DJ who is from Ukraine and
lived in the Western most parts of Russia. He has family trapped within
the conflict zone -- and others in Poland helping the refugees. No
matter what the global politics, this war is very personal for him and
thousands of others bearing its brutal consequences.
Andriy Sherehiy's weekly radio program DOBRI DEN includes music of
Ukraine interwoven with the voices of his friends and family who are
watching this tragedy unfold in the form of bombs and gunfire all around
them. They send us stories each week of shuffling their families back
and forth to safety while navigating the terrors of war.
Megan Sherehiy, who co-hosts Dobryi Den with her husband, composed the
PSAs that I circulated within the previous Resources for Ukraine e-mail.
In so doing, she doubled checked all of the organizations with
Guidestar and with family members in Ukraine -- to be sure we were
getting the word out about those groups that were truly doing the
hardest work.
Megan & Andriy have been a great asset to our community for
understanding truly what is happening on the ground in present-day
Ukraine. They bring primary source voices to the airwaves and we feel it
is our responsibility to share those voices and these resources with the
Grassroots Radio Community that has the power to amplify their message
even further.
I hope that any of the stations involved on this listserve would the
same thing when a member of their staff has personal insight on any
global crisis -- and perhaps this can inspire them to do so! Thank you
to the many individuals who have reached out over the past few days with
your support, input, and advice. This is the type of community I love
about the GRC! I hope you will stay in touch and continue to help us
develop this network for sharing international resources. & to the
haters, you can take your Russian Warships someplace else.
