Hi All,
This is particularly troublesome. But it points to the need for stations to be
a community resource that the community cares enough about to support. The
WRFG broadcast signal was impaired since the sign-on in the early 1970's, but
was finally upgraded in 2007 to the current coverage over the entire Atalanta metro
area. Perhaps bad timing when you consider the economic downturn in 2008. Better
late than never!
But 8 years on since then, the community is not stepping up to the plate, or
something is not working. Something more needs to be done to help Atlanta find
this station and recognize it as a compelling and useful (not to mention entertaining)
resource. And of course WRFG needs to be a compelling and useful resource as well.
Similarly, a long-time non-commercial station out in California (KUSP in Santa
Cruz) is facing financial problems that may well result in being taken off the air by the
current management, and sold to an out-of-town consortium, who will then program
classical music via satellite and remove any possibility of a local community station
ever coming back. In KUSP's situation, trying to do the same old thing over and over
again and expecting different results seems to be the real problem.
They are in the difficult positions they are in for somewhat different reasons, but
the results could be the same, the loss of a great signal and a loss to both communities.
KUSP signed on in April of 1972, and WRFG signed in July of 1973. I think we could
all learn from their experiences, and it appears that they could learn from the collective
experience of NFCB stations how to survive and thrive.
