[grc] LGBTQ+ Content on your stations?

OutCasting - Media for the Public Good lists at wdfh.org

I'm a longtime member of the GRC list and I'm aware of the general idea
that this list should not be used, at least on a regularbasis, for
dissemination of information about programming. I also followed the
recent discussion about making an exception, perhaps on a once-a-year
basis. But I'm responding to Mike Elmore's request for information on
LGBTQ+ programming. If you don't want to see information about the
programming we produce, please disregard this e-mail.

OutCasting is LGBTQ+ youth radio, a 29:00 program thatstarted at the
departed WDFH FM 90.3, just north of NYC, and has continued to be heard
on Sprouts on Pacifica since March 2013.

We can also make the program available to other stations that might want
to carry it, so if you're interested, please contact us (contact info
below).

Reporting on OutCasting, The Advocate said:

  * /"In-depth, well researched, and punchy in the right ways...
    NPR-level production values.... What makes all this remarkable is
    that most of the people working on the show... are barely old enough
    to drive."/

GLAAD said:

  * /"... some of the most honest and accurate representations of LGBT
    and allied youth in the media"/

OutCasting is issue-oriented and looks deeply, not broadly. Some of our
better-known guests have included:

  * Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry and a key architect of
    the marriage equality movement
  * Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay man elected as a bishop
    in the Episcopal Church (the church had a worldwide split over the
    issue of homosexuality when Bishop Gene was elected)
  * Greg Louganis, Olympic diver
  * Chris Mosier, transgender athlete
  * Dan Savage, author, activist, and co-founder of the It Gets Better
    Project
  * Michelangelo Signorile, authorand journalist
  * Gilbert Baker, creator of the rainbow flag, in one of his last
    interviews (he died on March 31; our interview was recorded on
    March1, and the first part of the two part program is scheduled for
    May 1, with the second part following on June 1)

Issues covered include:

  * Connecting LGBTQ youth with history
  * Asexuality
  * LGBTQ teen suicide
  * Transgender identities and issues
  * "Reparative" or "conversion" therapy
  * Marriage equality

Last spring, we also started creating shortform programs called
OutCasting OffAir, normally 3-6 minutes long. These are often more
personal essays; topics have included:

  * Gender fluidity and dysphoria
  * Why LGBTQ youth have to lie and the toll that takes
  * Reaction tothe Pulse massacre in Orlando
  * Gender norms
  * Bisexual erasure
  * How to be a good ally to the LGBTQ community

We spoke recently with Ursula at Pacifica and she suggested that
stations might want to broadcast these OffAir pieces as drop-ins, so
we're renaming the series OutCasting Overtime. More at

WDFH has been gone for almost four years, sadly, so we don't have a
platform for the programming of others. OutCasting's main studio is the
previous WDFH studio; we also have a fledgling bureau at Michigan State
University and plan to open other bureaus around the country. I have
the kids in our home studio only for one three-hour session each week,
so our production capacity is limited, but we're currently taking a run
at monthly production.

We're happy to offer both the OutCasting broadcast episodes and the
OutCasting Overtime pieces to your station. If you're interested,
please contact us(marc at wdfh.org or 914-315-9030).

Thanks for considering OutCasting.

Marc
