Last, I wanted to leave you with a bit of information about Rochester, so
each week, we'll be sending out a little note about what you can look
forward to when you visit. This week's focus is on a couple of
trailblazers:
In addition to being a bustling hive of community radio stations--including
five new LPFMs since 2014!--Rochester is a city rich in history, culture,
and natural beauty.
Rochester has played a major role in the fight for the rights of all
people. One of the most famous orators and writers of the 19th century,
Frederick Douglass lived in Rochester from 1847 to 1872. In 1847, Douglass
began publishing *The North Star*--a periodical devoted to abolitionist
issues and current events.
Women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony lived in Rochester from the age of
25 to her death in 1906. In 1872, Anthony was arrested for attempting to
vote on Madison Street located on Rochester’s west side.
Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglass’ grave can be found at Mt. Hope
Cemetery. The Cemetery is also a beautiful location for a hike or bike
ride. Anthony’s house is now a museum dedicated to her life and times.
