KKFI has had a few programmers do their shows remotely, but our Chief
Operator has discouraged that. In the first days of the lock down, the
board operators were often the ONLY individuals in the station. In
addition, we had fairly strict sanitation guidelines. At one point, our
Chief Operator told people "Do NOT spray disinfectant directly on the
sound boards." (We don't want you electrocuting yourself while frying
our equipment! ;-)
I'm part of KKFI's Equipment, Facilities and Technology Committee.
It has mostly been meeting remotely. Volunteers have been in the
station fixing problems, painting, upgrading equipment, etc. I've
personally been to the station twice since the lock down began: Around
May I carried junk to recycling. I went in August 13 to produce a show,
where I sat in a room separated by a wall with a big window from the
board operator, and we could wave and show big print on paper to one
another. The first time, I saw our Chief Operator and a couple of other
people preparing to go on the air. The second time, I saw a couple more
but still not as many as I would have seen before the pandemic. I think
all were wearing masks.

Some of our programmers have found substitutes because they don't feel comfortable doing their shows. We have no way for them to remote in to do shows. Our underwriting has been flat but not decreasing yet and we have the econmomic impacts of the local fires adding pressure. We just did a 4 day virtual pledge drive which was remarkably successful. All our station meetings have continued via Zoom. Our plan is that all this will continue indefinitely but certainly through June 2021.
