Overview
WPFW is a public affairs and jazz music community radio station serving the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It is owned by the Pacifica Foundation, and its studios are located on K Street Northwest.
WPFW is dedicated to programming that reflects progressive social change and democracy. The station advances a global, humanistic, and futuristic approach to news, public affairs, the creative arts, and cultural programming.

Position Description
The News Director will lead the day-to-day operations and long range development of the News Department at WPFW.
The News Director is responsible for advancing programming of high editorial and production value that connects with the interests and concerns of our audience, and expresses the vision of the Pacifica Radio Network.
The News Director will serve as a reporter and producer to create news programming that includes but may not be limited to writing and producing daily 5-minute newscasts, providing content for the Monday Morning QB weekly news magazine program, and providing editorial and production support to WPFW and Pacifica News special programming.
The News Director is responsible for meeting the administrative, management and staffing needs of the WPFW News Department, and ensuring compliance with federal and local DC regulations.
The News Director is responsible for coordinating long range planning and development that builds best practices, furthers our reach, and builds the fundraising capacity of the WPFW News Department.
The News Director is responsible for fostering a collaborative team that actively participates in defining and achieving the goals and standards of the WPFW News Department.
The News Director will represent WPFW when appropriate in public, and in communications with the Local Station Board, the Pacifica network of stations, Pacifica management and the Pacifica National Board.
The News Director will serve under the supervision of the WPFW Program Director and the WPFW General Manager.
Preferred Skills and Experience
5+ years experience in professional journalism, preferably in public media.
Demonstrated experience in broadcast production, writing, and editing for radio and web.
Strong judgment and understanding of journalistic standards, practices and ethics.
Experience in newsroom leadership and long range planning preferred.
Passion for connecting with diverse communities.
Familiarity with the issues that define the WPFW mission and are of interest to our audience, and a commitment to expanding on them in a news format.
Appreciation of collaborative work values, and ability to express them in a daily work environment.
Terms of Employment
• Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time, 40 hours/week position with minimum annual pay of $46,750, plus generous benefits.
This position is part of a SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit.
Work Location
Given the current COVID-19 public health crisis, this is currently a remote work opportunity with the option of periodic/intermittent in-person work. We recognize the fluidity of the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential revision of our work location policy.
