[grc] Norway to switch off FM in 2017 – Radio.no

As Frieda may remember (or not since she was off the AMARC board by then)the ITU (International Telecommunications Union, kind of the international equivalent of the FCC) has pushed for digitization and had told all TV stations that they had to convert to HD. The deadline may have been 2013 originally. And there was an effort to stampede radio stations in the same direction with some resistance from Community Radio. Because the equipment was beyond the means of most CR stations, there were concerns that a deadline would destroy many stations. As importantly, many Third World governments began to drag their feet on approving CR sector recognition and licensing on the grounds that it would all be for nought. I haven't looked back at any documents on this; rather pulling it from my addled brain but I think this is something for us to think about. I remember somebody at a GRC saying 'Well, let's just let them have HD and we'll take the entire FM spectrum.

Cheers to all in CR land and spare a thought for Nepal, the first Asian country to have community radio, Radio Sagarmatha, the name of the mountain that the western trekkies call Mt. Everest.
