I always just get the dasecs, without receivers.  saves $400.  Then I buy two old stereos from thrift stores, and hook them to the inputs. Usually cost maybe $25 each.   Make sure to plug everything into a UPS, so that if the power goes down, the receivers will stay tuned to their frequencies. Sometimes I need to run an external antenna, but you'd have to do that with an internal receiver, too.   Never had a problem with that set up.

I can't bear the idea of spending an extra $400 for what amounts to an AM and an FM tuner--- I have literally 40 FM tuners lying around my house, as i discovered when we did the "Million Radio March" on Washington DC.

I've used both the SAGE and the DASDEC, and would recommend both. As you say, the SAGE doesn't come with integrated receivers. External receivers can run you a lot if you get the nice ones, but you can use the cheaper ones like the Rolls HR78 or HS81. If you use cheaper receivers you can run into problems with reception, and with restarting on the wrong channel after power outages, and you won't be able to receive NOAA channels.

Best practice is to receive at least 3 channels for EAS, Local Primary 1, Local Primary 2, and the NOAA weather channel. You should check your state (and county if applicable) EAS plans to see if they require 2 or 3 receivers. Just google "EAS plan" + your state.

I would recommend getting the DASDEC-II DASLC+R (3 receivers) if you can swing it. If you need to save some money you could get the DASDEC-II DASLCR (2 receivers) and then add an external Rolls HR78 receiver for your Local Primary 2 station. That way you have a solid receiver following your LP1 station, a receiver following NOAA, and you can upgrade to a better external receiver for your LP2 at a later time.

Hope that helps!

Based on the list of LPFM equipment listed on several resources, KWVH-LP has been looking at using a Sage Digital ENDEC for our EAS. However in a discussion over a quote we received, I was asked about the number of tuners we'd need. They recommend 2 receivers to monitor to be fully compliant with the FCC. They said we may be better served getting the DASLCR which comes with 2 integrated receivers.

If we bought two receivers on top of the Sage, it's likely to be more costly than the DASLCR - but I don't know about qualities of either such as reliability and ease of use. I'd appreciate your help evaluating our options.

We haven't yet located the retired broadcast engineer here who might want to donate his / her services so all the costs need to be weighed.

Thank you!

Susan
