This is indeed changed in the latest version of Audacity. The audio 
"snippets" that comprise an Audacity project are now stored in a single 
file (actually a SQLite database, but users don't need to know that). So 
now, Audacity "projects" are much easier to manage and move around.

I believe non-destructive editing is on the list of proposed 
enhancements with the new owners of the Audacity code base. Also, with 
Audacity version 3.0.0 you can simulate non-destructive editing using

It's not true non-destructive editing, but it's a potentially useful 
work-around.

I miss SoundForge too! I was living in Madison, volunteering at WORT in 
the late 90's and early 2000's when the authors of SoundForge were also 
in Madison.
